March 2022 Workshop Registration

This month’s online workshop takes place March 13 at 3PM. It is called “Songs without words: Fantasies of Giovanni Coperario” and the presenter will be Mary Springfels.

Giovanni Coperario (AKA John Cooper) needs little introduction among viol players. His many  instrumental works are a delight to play while also providing opportunities to work on phrasing,  style, and intonation. Coperario was a gambist and lutenist himself, and served as composer at  the English court from 1605 to 1626. Among others, he taught the future King Charles I as well  as the Lawes brothers–Henry and William. Many of his fantasias imitate his madrigals, hence we  will play “songs without words” during our visit to Jacobean England. We will discuss the  structures of a selection of the 3-,4-, and 5-part fantasies and playing techniques, especially bowing.

Special Option! Have you gotten back to playing with others? Play live for class! Players are  encouraged to form small ensembles of 3-5 parts to be coached during class. You can either play  live or submit a video of your group. Using an external microphone will be extremely helpful;  inquire if you have tech questions. Participants will listen, comment, and then play along. If you  need help selecting a piece, please inquire. The more participatory you are, the more you’ll get  out of the experience. Players who wish to lie low will mute themselves and play along, just as if  they were working with a pre-recorded performance. If no groups elect to play, we’ll work with  pre–recorded material instead.

Open to all levels; auditors welcome. Class will be recorded and made available to registrants for  one month.
