April 2022 Online workshop
For our April 2022 Special topics workshop, taking place April 2, our guest presenter Patricia Ann Neely will present a workshop called “Susanna Rare” focusing on settings of the famous song Susanne un jour.
Susanne un jour, a poem by Guillaume Guéroult (1507-1569), is the story of Susanna and the Elders, which appears in the Book of Daniel. The text is associated with several vocal settings, the first settings associated with Didier Lupi Second and Orlando de Lassus. We are usually introduced to settings of the chanson in diminution settings for solo viola bastarda, bassoon, and melody instruments. We will explore settings in four and five parts from France, Italy, Iberia, England, Poland, the Low Countries and Germany. Composers include the following:
- France – Didier Lupi Second, Orlando de Lassus, Claude Lejeune
- Italy – Ippolito Tartaglino
- Iberia – Hernando Cabezon
- England – Ferrabosco I, Giles Farnaby
- Poland, Low Countries, North Germany – Adam Jarzebski, Jean de Castro, Sweelinck, John Dowland, Johann Sommer.
Especially for Intermediate and Advanced players; auditors of all levels are welcome. The class will be recorded and made available to registrants for one month.
