January 2023 Workshop Registration

The VdGS-NE continues its new season of special topics workshops. We welcome guest presenter James Williamson to lead a workshop called ” Transforming the Lachrymae”

This workshop will take place on Saturday January 21, at 3:00PM EDT.

John Dowland’s Lachrymae, or Flow my Tears, is one of the biggest hits of the late Renaissance, appearing in manuscript and print in sources all over Europe. Part of what makes this piece special though is the vast number of transformations it underwent along the way. This class will be part lecture and part play-along. First we will re-familiarize ourselves with the original Lachrymae Pavan in its instrumental and vocal versions and then take a whirl-wind tour of Europe, attentively listening to and in some cases playing along with many different versions of the song. We will finish up by playing through Dowland’s own transformations of the Lachrymae, his seven tears, with a more thorough understanding of how the song is put together. This class is appropriate for players of an intermediate level and up. Some knowledge of music theory will be helpful to follow the lecture portion of the class.

For Intermediate and up. Listeners of all levels are welcome!
Pitch is A=415.

For more information please consult the workshop flyer.

The fee for the workshop is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. If you indicate on the signup form that you would like to join the society, your first year’s membership will be free! If this poses a challenge for you, contact our treasurer. The registration deadline is January 19, 2023.
