On Tuesday, July 10, the VdGS-NE helped present This Cross Upon My Breast, the 2018 Silbiger Grant performance. Joshua Garvey, with a viol consort assembled by Hannah Davidson, performed works by Dowland and gave the New England premiere of John Harbison’s The Cross of Snow. A review of the performance follows.
The board members of the Viola da Gamba Society - New England all feel that this fiscal year would be a good time to show our appreciation for the current recording/corresponding secretary, Martha Davison. It is high time that Martha be recognized for all that she has done, and continues to do, to support and promote viol playing in New England and beyond.
The application period is now open, with a deadline of June 15, 2018. Notice of the Selection Committee’s decisions will be given by July 15, 2018. The Ferrabosco Project The 2001-2002 season marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Viola da Gamba Society-New England. To celebrate the occasion the Society wanted a permanent memento, and decided a collaborative CD was appropriate. Founding member Bruce Bellingham suggested a subject for the CD, the complete four-part fantasias of Alfonso Ferrabosco II.
