While the viol had arrived in England in the 1520s, in 1540 Henry VIII expanded his 'music' with the addition of two Jewish/Italian/Iberian families; and it's clear that the instrument started becoming popular with nobility and wealthy individuals during Elizabeth's reign.  Robert Parsons was born in Henry's reign and tragically drowned in the river Trent in 1572.  He was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, and was succeeded by Byrd. He was a composer of immense technical and emotional ability and his small surviving body of works for viols is impressive and hugely varied in difficulty and size.  It was surely his two seven-part In Nomines that Purcell must have come across over 100 years later.   

Under the tutorship of Fretwork members Richard Boothby, Reiko Ichise, Asako Morikawa, Richard Tunnecliffe, Liam Byrne, and Susanna Pell, we will look at pieces by Parsons: In Nomine a 4 x 2; Ut re me fa sol a 4; In Nomine a 5; De la Court a 5; A Songe of Mr Parsons a 5; The Songe called Trumpets a 6; In Nomine a 7 x 2, as well as at works of other Elizabethan composers. As usual, a beginners’ class will be offered if there is sufficient registration. And, don’t miss Fretwork’s concert the night before, 7:30, Saturday, November 13, also at Brandeis: Birds on Fire: Jewish music for viols. The workshop and concert are parts of a three-day residency by Fretwork at Brandeis, which will also include a presentation on Friday afternoon at 3:00 on the musical significance of Drake's circumnavigation, with musical examples drawn from their new program, "The World Encompassed" (free and open to the general public).
