More than thirty years ago, in 1976, the first workshop of the
Viola da Gamba Society of New England was held on the beautiful campus
of Wellesley College. On September 19, 2009, Wellesley will again be
the host of another day long workshop, for which the theme will be
music for voices and viols through the centuries. Coaches will come
from the Boston area and beyond.
Mary Ann Ballard will lead a beginners’ class. Pre-formed consorts are welcome as always.
Special Note!!!: Our fall workshop is part of "A
Weekend of Early Music at Wellesley College", featuring workshops
sponsored by Amherst Early Music & The Viola Da Gamba Society of
New England, and a capstone concert "Celebrating The Viola da Gamba at
Wellesley College - Honoring Professor Emeritus Owen Jander",
Professor Emeritus of Wellesley College and mentor to many
musicians during his years there. On Sunday, September 20 at the
Tishman Commons building,7:00 p.m.,there will be a concert, free and
open to the
public, entitled “Wellesley Women Bridging the Centuries”
with music by composers from the fifteenth century to the present; a
reception will follow. Performers will include Mary Ann Ballard, Ruth
Cunningham, Wendy Gillespie, Tracy Hoover, Lynn Tetenbaum, and others,
and former and current viol teachers Adrienne Hartzell and Laura
Jeppesen. On Saturday, from 1:45-2:30, there will also be a round table
discussion, “Life as a viol player after Wellesley,” led by
Professor Jander with Wellesley alumnae.
