“The
English Invasion!” is an exploration of the influence of
English composers on 17th century North German
music. While a great many revolutions have had significant political
repercussions, others have made their impact on
a cultural and social level. John Dowland, William Brade, and Thomas
Simpson brought their compositional style to North Germany in the early
17th century and their influence was evident
shortly thereafter in the works of composers such as Nicholas Bleier,
Johann Schultz, Johann Schop, Johann Sommer,
and more. Music will be chosen from among the following publications
and others:
Opus newer Paduanen, Galliarden,
Intraden, Canzonen - Thomas Simpson (1617)
Auβerlesener
Paduanen und Galliarden, Erster Theil - Zacharias Füllsack und
Christian Hildebrandt
(1607)
Neue lustige Volten, Couranten,
Balletten, Padoanen, Galliarden, Masqueraden - William Brade (1621)
Taffel Consort, Erster
Theil - Thomas Simpson, Engeländer, (1621)
Together, the instrumental dance repertoire of British and North German
composers in this period complement each other well, and imaginative
use of pre-existing material, combined with the creativity inherent in
each native composer, provides a refreshing musical experience. Our
coaches will include Carol Lewis and Alice Robbins. As always, a
beginners’ class will be offered if there is enough
interest.
