This
workshop, open to viol
players and singers, will focus on music from the Dow Part Books.
Compiled in a beautiful hand by Robert Dow in the 1580s, the MS
includes motets, hymns, psalms, secular songs and instrumental music in
five parts by Byrd, Tallis, Parsons, White, Taverner and their
contemporaries (mostly English, though Lassus, for example, is
represented by three compositions). If there is enough interest there
will be classes for those who would like to try reading from the
facsimile, which uses challenging clefs and has no bar lines. Workshop
faculty will include Convivium’s director, Michael Barrett,
and
Hannah Davidson, as well as Jane Hershey, Laura Jeppesen, Alice Robbins
and Emily Walhout, all of whom were coaches for Ellen Powers’
weekly ”Mezzo-Forte Viol Consort” from 1984-2009.
As
always, beginners are welcome.
The vocal group Convivium Musicum, with members of the workshop
faculty, will present a concert devoted to music from the Dow Part
Books at 7:00 at All Saints church. The concert, which is free and open
to the public and will be followed by a reception, is co-sponsored by
Powers Music School as part of its 50th anniversary celebration, and as
a remembrance of Ellen Powers, a founding member of both the School and
VdGS-NE. To learn about Powers, visit powersmusic.org.
