Vittorio Ghielmi, viola da gamba
Luca Pianca, lute

The Golden Age of the Viola da Gamba and the Lute

Works by Marais, Gallot, Forqueray, S. L. Weiss, Abel, and Lidl
February 25 in New York, NY • February 26 in Cambridge, MA

Each an accomplished soloist in his own right, award-winning viola da gambist Vittorio Ghielmi, and Il Giardino Armonico founder Luca Pianca, lute, together have toured the world performing the extensive, but little-known repertoire for lute and viola da gamba. Their most recent CD, “Bagpipes from Hell,” explores the rustic side of the repertoire alongside more refined works by Marais, Gallot, Forqueray, S. L. Weiss, Abel, and Lidl, and provides the basis of their début concert with the Boston Early Music Festival.

“Pianca displays beautiful tone and expressivity in the solo lute pieces by Weiss, while Ghielmi transforms the viola da gamba into a hurdy-gurdy in Sainte-Colombe's ‘Vielle.’ When the two play together they create a very rich sound.” – Early Music America on “Bagpipes from Hell”
